The brilliant Dr. Azuma created many robots to aid humankind. However, during a thunderstorm his lab was struck by lightning, corrupting the programming of one of his robots, BK-1, who renames himself Braiking Boss and declares that instead of serving mankind, mankind will now serve him! He brings other robots together into an overwhelming army bent on enslaving the human race.
Tetsuya, Dr. Azuma's son, asks his father to turn him into an indestructible android so that he will have the power to destroy the threat his father inadvertently created. Shortly thereafter, Braiking Boss captures Dr. Azuma and his wife, Tetsuya, now renamed Casshern, sets out to turn the tide of the war and rescue his parents, with the help of his girlfriend, Luna, and robot dog, Friender.<캐산>은 50년의 전쟁 후, 대아시아연방공화국의 승리로 끝나지만 황폐해진 대지만 남게 된다. 아즈마박사는 아내의 불치병치료를 위해 시작한 신조세포 연구를 군 당국의 도움으로 완성하게 된다. 하지만 변이 신조인간들이 탄생하자 군 당국을 이들을 무참히 사살한다. 살아남은 신조인간들은 인류를 멸망시키려 하고, 이때 아즈마박사의 아들 테츠야가 전쟁에서 전사한 채 돌아온다. 박사는 테츠야를 신조인간 캐산으로 부활시키고 이렇게 하여 신조인간 캐산과 로봇부대와의 인류의 운명을 건 전쟁이 시작된다.
